What’s Happening | Memorial Day Weekend

Here’s a list of opportunities to get out and about this weekend!

The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, May 28 marks the first free fishing day in the Commonwealth.  Fish-for-Free Days allow residents and non-residents to legally fish in Pennsylvania without a fishing license. From 12:01AM to 11:59PM, no fishing license is needed to fish in Pennsylvania’s waterways. All other fishing regulations apply.

Now through May 30, SiriusXM has unlocked 100 of its satellite radio channels.  You don’t have to register or pay, just turn your radio on and enjoy.

Shippensburg

Katie’s Place Thrift Shop is having its next monthly sale this week Thursday – Friday – Saturday from 8AM – Noon.  The store is located at the old Martin’s Bakery Building (go down the hill to the bottom of the building) at the corner of S. Penn and E. Garfield Streets.  Clothing for the entire family, housewares, accessories, cookware, pictures, dishes, novelties, books, and MORE!

The Shippensburg Memorial Park Pool will open for the last day of school, Friday May 26th.  A School’s Out Summer Party at the Pool will be held 10:30AM – 5PM.  $3 Admission for Students.

Mothers receive free admittance to the Memorial Park Pool on May 28 from Noon – 8PM.  In addition, Mothers get a free shaved Hawaiian Ice.

Come out and support the Shippensburg Memorial Day activities on Monday May 29. Events 10AM – Ceremony at Locust Grove Cemetery, 11AM – Ceremony at Spring Hill Cemetery, Noon – Flag raising ceremony at Shippensburg Veterans Memorial Park, 1:15PM – Navy & Marine Memorial Service at Branch Bridge on King St., 2PM – Parade from corner of King & Prince Streets.

Newville/Carlisle

The Newville Joint Veterans Council will hold a Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 29 at 1PM. The parade will form on Broad Street beginning at Noon. The parade will follow the following route: Walnut Street to W. Big Spring Avenue, W. Big Spring Avenue to South High Street, South High Street to West Main Street, and West Main Street to West Street. The Veterans Memorial Service will follow the parade at approximately 2PM. In the event of rain, the parade will be canceled. The Memorial Service will be then be held at the VFW Post 6070.

The Joint Veterans Council of Carlisle will hold the Annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday at 9AM, with services following the parade at Veterans’ Memorial Courtyard at 9:45AM.  Inclement Weather: Parade will be cancelled and the ceremonies will be held in the Old Courthouse.

Cumberland Drive-In Theatre is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on Memorial Day Weekend.  Double Feature: Friday-Saturday, May 26th-27th Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales;  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2  Triple Feature: Sunday, May 28th  Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales;  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2;  The Fate of the Furious. 

Chambersburg/Fayetteville

The North Square Farmers Market will kick off its ninth season Saturday, May 27, with over 20 vendors offering local produce and artisan merchandise.  8AM – Noon.  Market tunes by Jo’ Blues from 9AM – 11AM and kids’ activity by Voila! Children’s Art and Creativity Center.  Kids aged 3 -12 may sign up for POP (Power Of Produce) Club. POP Members receive $2 in tokens per market visit to be used on fresh fruits and vegetables. Membership in POP Club is free.  Rain or Shine.

On May 27, ride the miniature train at Norlo Park.  The miniature train, complete with a cattle car and caboose, is FREE to ride on Saturdays from 1PM to 4PM!  It is open to riders of all ages.  Last Train boards at 3:50PM.  Donations are accepted.  A passive display of two cabooses, a flat car, and a wooden tank car are also on site.

The 2017 Marion Festivals will be held on the following 5 Saturdays:  May 27, June 3, June 10, June 17, & June 24.  Free Entertainment with 3 Shows each night (6:15 PM; 7:30 PM; 9 PM).  Food, Games, Rides.  Kitchen opens at 4:30PM.  Free parking.

From May 26 – Jun 11, Driving Miss Daisy will be at Totem Pole Playhouse.  Set in mid-20th-century Atlanta, the show tells the story of an elderly Jewish woman, Daisy Werthan, and her chauffeur, Hoke Coleburn, portrayed by New Orleans actor Lance Nichols. The Chambersburg Memorial Day Parade is May 29 at 9:15AM.  The Cumberland Valley Twenty-One Day Retreat Organization will sponsor the Memorial Day parade; after participants gather at 8:45AM at Fifth Avenue and Lincoln Way East, they will move west toward the square at 9:15AM. A program, featuring speaker guest speaker, District Attorney Matt Fogal, will begin at 10AM. In case of rain, the service will take place at 10:30AM at American Legion Post 46, 755 Philadelphia Ave.

A free Memorial Day Concert will be held May 29 (7:30PM) at Chambersburg Memorial Park.  Hosted by the Cumberland Valley School of Music, the open-air concert will feature the school’s symphonic band and community choir and will include a flag-folding ceremony to honor veterans, as well as recognition of those who have served or are currently serving during the Armed Forces Salute. Rain location will be the Chambersburg Area Senior High School auditorium. 7:30PM.

Waynesboro

Downtown Waynesboro will have a Memorial Day Parade on May 29 at 9AM.

Renfrew Institute’s Youth Festival “Unity in the Community” is Sunday, May 28th from 1PM – 5:30PM.  This fun event features a variety of workshops, demonstrations, activities, exhibits, and entertainment throughout the day, including a performance by the Waynesboro Children’s Theatre Troupe singing Songs of the 80s.

Biglerville/Gettysburg

Hollabaugh Bros. will be having a Strawberry Festival on Memorial Day weekend, May 27 and 28! Fresh Strawberry Sundaes, Strawberry Pies, Strawberries n’ Shortcake, Strawberry activities for the kids…it’s ALL strawberries, all weekend!  Saturday, May 27th from 8AM-5PM and Sunday, May 28th from Noon-5PM.

The 150th Annual Gettysburg Memorial Day parade and ceremony is one of the oldest continuing ceremonies in the country.  The Memorial Day Parade will begin at 2PM at Lefever Street in Gettysburg and head northeast to Middle Street; turn west on East Middle Street and south on Baltimore Street to the Soldiers’ National Cemetery.  The Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at 3PM at the Rostrum in the Soldiers’ National Cemetery.

Harrisburg

Kick off Summer 2017 at Bass Pro Shops! On May 27 & 28 there are FREE Kids’ Activities. Catch & Release pool, Craft, take a digital photo, enjoy a snack tasting and attend a workshop. Stop in Sat. Noon-5pm or Sun. 12:30-4:30 for this FREE fun!

On May 27 through May 29 is the Artsfest at Harrisburg Riverfront Park.  The outdoor juried artist market of fine art features 250 artists, a film festival, kidsfest, and free entertainment on three stages.  2017 Artsfest artists specialize in a variety of media including: ceramics, digital, drawing, fiber (decorative and wearable), furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and wood.   Saturday & Sunday 10AM-7PM; Monday 10AM-5PM.

Maryland

The Washington County Tractor Pullers and East Coast Pullers will have a Truck & Tractor Pull May 27th at 6PM.
