Free Summer Reading Programs

Every year there are several programs designed to keep children reading ALL summer!  These are often totally FREE and your child can earn prizes!

scholastic power up and read

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a FREE online reading program that motivates students to read as a part of a school team.  The theme this year is Power Up & Read and is aimed at children ages 4-14.  Kids log their minutes spent reading on the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge website, participate in weekly reading challenges, and earn digital rewards.  There are free book lists to download by age group.  Program runs now through September 4th.

Summer Reading from Barnes & Noble for 2015 is called Imagination’s Destination.  The Barnes and Noble summer reading program is available to school-aged children in grades 1-6. The Program rewards kids with a FREE book after they have read 8 books of their choice. Bring the completed Reading Journal to your local B&N store.  Read any 8 books and record them in the Reading Journal.  Choose a FREE BOOK from the selection on the Reading Journal list at the store.

Books-A-Million is launching its Summer Quest Reading Ambassador program featuring Rick Riordan, where young readers who participate will be rewarded with an exclusive “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” Half-Blood tote bag.  Participants must read four books from the reading list and return the completed list to a Books-A-Million store. The reading list has over 75 popular books for both kids and teens.  Find it HEREAfter completing the reading list form and returning it to Books-A-Million, you will receive the Percy Jackson 10th anniversary Camp Half-Blood tote bag. Program runs now through August 8.

Book Adventure is a free, online reading program for children in grades K-8, brought to you by Sylvan Learning.  Children can read books, and go online and quiz themselves on what they have read. They will earn prizes for reading!

Your child can keep track of their reading through one of the Rewards Calendars at Chuck E. Cheese’s. Once they have completed two weeks of reading he or she can submit the completed Chuck E Cheese calendar for 10 free tokens! (Lots of other great incentive/reward sheets available too!)  Find the Reading Reward Calendar Here.

One of the BEST resources is your local public library!  If you are in Cumberland County,  go to 2015 Summer Reading Program. Registration opens June 1st.  The theme this year is Soar Into Reading with the Ice Cream Party Kickoff to Summer Reading on June 2nd at 6:00 pm (Shippensburg)!  Below is the flyer from Shippensburg Public Library!
