What’s Happening | June 9, 10, & 11

Here’s a list of opportunities to get out and about this weekend!

Shippensburg

Fred Yoder will be at The Local Gathering on June 9, 7PM – 10PM.  Admission is free.  

Zerbini Family Circus will be in Shippensburg on Friday, June 9 and Chambersburg on Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11.  The Circus will feature Jugglers, Clowns, Acrobats, Camel, Dog and Horse acts as well as many other Traditional Family Circus Artists.  This year they will also have animated baby dinosaurs for children to interact with.

The Cumberland Valley Hitmen (local semi-pro football team) will take on the Viking’s at Veterans Stadium on June 10th at 1PM for the first round of Playoffs.  FREE admission.

Shippensburg Area EMS will host the 5th Annual Safety Day this year on Saturday, June 10, 2017, 10AM – 3PM.  The event will be held at Shippensburg Area Emergency Services Building, 711 E. Orange Street/20 Walnut Bottom Rd.  Rain or Shine.  Giveaways and FREE health screenings.  Learn Friends & Family CPR, watch EMS Equipment Demonstrations, and plan for Family Emergencies.  Additional activities on Safety Day include ambulance and paramedic units displays, EMS station tours, and Smith’s chicken barbecue sale.

The Sturgis Showhouse is located in the historic district of Shippensburg at 20 West King Street.  It was the boyhood home of General Samuel Davis Sturgis, a Union General in the Civil War.  The home will be open to the public through June 11 as a fundraiser for the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, Inc.

The Shippensburg community will come together to fight cancer on June 10th! Free admission, family friendly.  Music, food, and plenty of activities.  See the schedule for Shippensburg’s Relay for Life 2017 here.

The first Truck and Tractor Pull of the season at Shippensburg Fairgrounds is Saturday, June 10th at 7 PM!  Bring your lawn chairs.  Admission: Adults $10.00; Children (5-11) $5.00

Beyond Shippensburg

Carlisle: The annual Dickinson College U-Turn & Community Yard Sale will be held from 7:30AM to 1PM on Saturday, June 10 at Carlisle Fairgrounds, K Street entrance, inside building T.  The college sale features donated items by departing Dickinson College students.  Admission is free beginning at 8:30 AM, but early birds can pay $5 to enter at 7:30 AM.

Carlisle:  Celebrate the history and heritage of Kings Gap on Sunday, June 11 at the First Annual Heritage Day.  Tour the Carriage House and/or Mansion to get a ticket for a free Carriage Ride!  Bring a blanket and lunch and have a picnic while listening to music of the era.  Food will also be available for sale.

Chambersburg:  Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale classic, The Little Mermaid will be rendered in glowing blacklight, with original music and choreography by Chambersburg Ballet Theatre Artistic Director Lavinia Reid.  June 10th 2PM & 6:30PM.  Tickets are $14 for adults.

Chambersburg:  Enjoy strawberries and ice cream in the courtyard of the Old Jail this weekend.  $5 includes your strawberry treat as well as admission to the Historical Society’s wedding dress exhibit. Hours are Saturday, June 9 10AM-4PM and Sunday, June 10 1PM-4PM.

Chambersburg:  Second Saturdays kick-off for the summer on June 10 at Chambers Fort Park.  June’s event will begin with Concerts in the Park from 5PM-8PM featuring live music from Rivers along with opener Cody Wilt. The Downtown Summer Movie Series will follow at dusk showing Disney’s “Moana” (2016).

Marion:  The 2017 Marion Festivals continue June 10.  Free Entertainment with 3 Shows each night (6:15PM; 7:30PM; 9PM).  Food Games, Rides.  Kitchen opens at 4:30PM.  Free parking.

Harrisburg:  Central Penn Parent’s 8th annual Harrisburg Family Festival will take place on Saturday, June 10, at the HACC Harrisburg campus.  This FREE event will feature live music and stage performances, a petting zoo and pony rides, Atomic bounce houses, storytime corner, and lots of exhibitors with child-friendly activities. Children are also invited to dress up and walk in the costume parade or bring their favorite stuffed animal for a check-up.

Ongoing Summer Events

North Square Farmers Market is open from 8AM – Noon on Saturday mornings until October 21.  You will find local produce, cheeses, fresh-cut flowers, baked goods, handmade soaps and body products, locally roasted coffee and specialty foods. Food vendors will have breakfast and lunch items available.  Kids aged 3 -12 can sign up for POP (Power Of Produce) Club! POP Members receive $2 in tokens per market visit to be used on fresh fruits and vegetables. Look for the market tents behind King Street Church in Chambersburg!

The miniature train at Norlo Park is FREE to ride on Saturdays from 1PM to 4PM.  It is open to riders of all ages.  Last Train boards at 3:50PM.  Donations are accepted.

FREE Concerts at Chambersburg Memorial Park Kiwanis Band Shell continue all Summer long. View the dates HERE.

From May 26 – Jun 11, Driving Miss Daisy will be at Totem Pole Playhouse.  Set in mid-20th-century Atlanta, the show tells the story of an elderly Jewish woman and her chauffeur.  For ticket information visit here.

Showing Friday-Sunday, June 9-11 at Cumberland Drive-In is the Captain Underpants: The Epic Movie and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.  Gates open at 7PM. First feature begins at approximately 8:55PM.
