What’s Happening on Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of Summer!  Here’s a list of opportunities to get out and about this weekend.

Pennsylvania offers two Fish for Free Days!   For 2016, Sunday, May 29th and Monday, July 4th have been designated Pennsylvania’s Fish for Free Days!  Fish for Free Days allow residents and non-residents to legally fish on Pennsylvania waterways on the designated days with NO FISHING LICENSE REQUIRED (Trout/Salmon and Lake Erie permits are also NOT required). All other fishing regulations still apply.

Just in time for the Memorial Day holiday travel period, Sirius-XM radio has unlocked 60 of its channels.  From now through May 31, if your car radio features Sirius-XM, but you don’t subscribe, you can flip over and try it out for free.  You don’t have to register or pay anything.

Shippensburg

SHAPE’s 11th Annual Member Exhibit continues this week.  Come see artwork from over 20 different artists.  Wednesday to Friday – 4 to 7 PM; Saturday – 11 AM to 4 PM.

The Shippensburg Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 30th 2 PM.  10 AM –  Service at Locust Grove Cemetery, North Queen Street; 11 AM –  Services at Spring Hill Cemetery, 114 N. Morris St.  Noon – Flag raising at Shippensburg Veterans Memorial Park; 1:15 PM – Navy and Marine ceremony, Branch Bridge, West King Street; 2 PM – Parade.

On Friday, May 27th 7 PM – 10 PM (doors open at 6) The Local Gathering will host an evening of Classic Acoustic Rock with Crimson.  Bring your lawn chairs/blankets.  This is a fundraiser for AWAKENHAITI.  Donations by check or cash will be accepted to help provide supplies and medications for a rural community in Bèlot, Haiti.  The Local Gathering, 611 Shippensburg Rd (Newburg Rd Rt. 696 out of Shippensburg; Half Mile past the Ridge Road).

Mommy and Me or Daddy and Me Paint Day (Grandparents and me too) will be held at The Local Gathering Church of the Nazarene from 10 AM – Noon on Saturday, May 28th.  Snacks and drinks will be provided. $25 per set (two canvases). $5 extra per child.  Children must be 18 years or younger for the $5 charge. The $25 charge is per adult and a child 18 years old and younger.

Beyond Shippensburg

Cumberland Drive-In Theatre, 3290 Ritner Highway, Newville, is open Friday – Saturday, May 27  & May 28.  Gates open at 7 p.m. First feature begins at approximately 8:45 PM. First Feature:  X-Men: Apocolypse   Second Feature:  Daddy’s Home  $8 Adults;  $4 Children 3-12; FREE for Children Under 3.  Sunday, May 29 – Bonus Triple Feature: Kung Fu Panda 3, X-men Apocolypse, Daddy’s Home $10/Adults, $5 Children 3 – 12.

North Square Farmers Market, 50 N. Main Street, Chambersburg continues Saturday, May 28 from 8 AM to NoonFree parking at the Courthouse.  Over twenty local vendors will offer local produce as well as cheeses, breads, fresh-cut flowers, baked goods, handmade soaps, & MORE. Children ages 3 -12 can sign up for POP (Power of Produce) Club.  Members receive $2 in tokens per market visit to be used on produce or vegetable plants! Membership in POP Club is free. 

The Towne Singers of Chambersburg will pay tribute to Memorial Day with “Hear America Sing!” a concert featuring the music of America over the past century.  The concert, scheduled for Saturday, May 28 at the Capitol Theatre in Chambersburg, will begin at 7:00 PM.  The Capitol Theatre is located at 159 S. Main St. in downtown Chambersburg.  Tickets prices are $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for children 12 and under and may be purchased by calling the Capitol Theatre Box Office at 717-263-0202 or go HERE.

On May 30, the annual Memorial Day Parade in Chambersburg will form at Fifth Avenue at Lincoln Way East.  Begins at 8:30 AM, follows Lincoln Way through the square, disbands at the bridge on Lincoln Way West.  Lincoln Way will be closed until about 11 AM.

On Saturday, May 28th 1 PM the free miniature train rides begin at Norlo Park, 3050 Lincoln Way East, Fayetteville.  It is open to riders of all ages. The train, complete with a cattle car and caboose, is FREE to ride on Saturdays from 1 PM to 4 PM throughout Summer & Fall!  Last Train boards at 3:50 pm.  Donations are accepted.

The first Saturday of the 2016 Marion Festivals  is May 28th.  Free Entertainment with 3 Shows each night (6:15 PM; 7:30 PM; 9 PM).  Food Games, Rides.  Kitchen opens at 4:30 PM.  Free parking.

Renfrew Institute’s Youth Festival, Biodiversity Boogie! Backyards and Beyond is Sunday, May 29, 2016  12:30 PM to 5:30 PM.  This fun event features a variety of workshops, demonstrations, activities, exhibits, and entertainment throughout the day, including a performance by the Waynesboro Children’s Theatre Troupe. Specialty playshops tie in the Biodiversity Boogie! theme with fun activities. This year’s special guest performer is Billy B, The Natural Science Song and Dance Guy! Billy B’s musical performances burst with energetic songs and dances about swamps, estuaries, biodiversity, rainforests, geology and natural wonders. Pre-register for fun playshops.

On May 28 through May 30 is the Artsfest at Harrisburg Riverfront Park.  The outdoor juried artist market of fine art features 250 artists, a film festival, a children’s film festival, and free entertainment on three stages.   Hand-crafted works will be available for sale in more than fifteen different categories, including fine art, clay, photography, apparel, jewelry, metal, glass, wood, mixed media, musical instruments and more.

The Butterfly House at Hershey Gardens opens Friday, May 27.  Featuring 350 to 400 butterflies that represent nearly 25 North American varieties.

Hersheypark’s Boardwalk opens Saturday, May 28.  Memorial Day weekend park hours 10 AM – 10 PM Friday – Sunday; 10 AM – 8 PM Memorial Day.

Memorial Day Weekend at DelGrosso’s Park in Tipton, PA features free entertainment all weekend long with Marvelous Mutts Dog Show.  All Military and Service Members Ride and Slide FREE on Memorial Day Monday only. Must stop at the Ticket Booth to get a Free Wristband. Please bring a form of Military ID.

The Commemorative Air Force is bringing its AirPower History Tour to Hagerstown Regional Airport.  On May 30 – June 1, visitors will be able to get an up-close view of the premiere bomber of World War II, FIFI  and the C-45 Expediter.  The event is open to the public Monday 2 – 5 PM; Tuesday & Wednesday 9 – 5 PM.  Admission is $10 for adults; $5 Children ages 11 to 17; Children 10 and under FREE.  You can also purchase rides on both aircraft.
