What’s Happening | December 16, 17, 18

Shippensburg

  • Tiny World is now decorated and lighted for the holidays.  Visit Tiny World at 6720 Rice Road, Shippensburg and see miniature village whose tiny buildings are landscaped, lighted and furnished.  Santa will be at Tiny World on Saturday, Dec. 17th. 
  • The Ridge Church of the Brethren will hold a “Live Nativity Re-enactment” on Friday, Dec. 16, and Saturday, Dec. 17. The show will start at 7 PM each night. The nativity has more than 30 characters that will dress in Biblical costumes and live animals. The event is held outside on the church property at 1095 Ridge Road, Shippensburg. Guests can bring a lawn chair, stand, or remain in their parked vehicles. Refreshments will be provided after the show inside the church.
  • The Local Gathering Presents an evening with JJK and Company. Christmas, 70’s pop and Southern Gospel on Dec 16th 7 PM.  Doors open at 6 PM. This is a free event held at 611 Shippensburg Rd. (Newburg Rd Rt. 696 from Shippensburg; Half Mile past the Ridge Road)
  • Southampton Cumberland Twp. Park and Rec. is excited to host Santa Claus for Milk and Cookies on Saturday Dec. 17 at 3 PM. Come out and meet Santa, enjoy a snack and watch Christmas Movies. You can even write a letter and hand it to him personally. This is a free event.
  • Holly Days! Craft, Vendor Show will be held December 17, 9 AM – 4 PM at Courtyard Shipensburg, 503 Newburg Road, Shippensburg.  Vendors and Crafters, Cookies, Hot Cocoa, and Music.

Pleasant Hall

  • Breakfast with Santa will be held at the Pleasant Hall Volunteer Fire Company, 9722 Cumberland Highway on Saturday, December 17 8 AM – 10 AM.  The cost is $5 for adults, children 12 and under are free. If you’re just coming to visit Santa and not eat breakfast there is no charge. No tickets/reservations are needed.

Chambersburg

  • Greenvillage Drive-In Restaurant will be having a Santa Breakfast on Saturday, December 17th from 8 AM-10:45 AM.
  • Franklin Hardware & Pet Center, 1975 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg is having their 18th Annual Pet Extravaganza Sale with Free Pet Photos with Santa.  On Friday, December 16 from 4 PM – 7 PM a photographer will be taking free 4×6 photos.  The Pet Extravaganza Sale will also include refreshments, hourly door prizes, and deals.  The entire store is 20% off from 4 PM – 7 PM!
  • Bring the kids to the Chambersburg Mall on Saturday, December 17th from Noon – 7 PM or Sunday, December 18th from Noon – 5 PM to bounce and have some fun!  AE Bounce House Rentals will have their inflatables set up at the mall.  The price will be $5.00 per child for the December dates.
  • Bell Avenue Christmas Lights located near the corner of Sollenberger Road and Bell Avenue in Chambersburg features a light show with over 15,000 lights set to music.  When you arrive, tune to 106.5FM to enjoy the show and holiday music. Sun-Thur: 5:30-9:30pm & Fri & Sat: 5:30-10:30pm. Shows may not run during bad weather.
  • The Chambersburg Ballet Theatre will present its original version of the “The Nutcracker” at the Capitol Theatre in two matinee performances at 3 PM on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 17 and 18.  Tickets for “The Nutcracker” are available at the Capitol Theatre Box Office, (717) 263-0202, or online, at:  thecapitoltheatre.org.  The Capitol Theatre is located at 159 S. Main St., Chambersburg.
  • The Towne Singers will be presenting a Holiday concert on Friday December 16, 7 pm at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 750 Norland Ave.

Newville/Carlisle

  • Benchfield Farms will be offering Carriage rides in downtown Carlisle (weather permitting) on Friday, December 16 and Saturday, December 17,  5 PM – 9 PM (with Santa)  Carriage rides will cost $5 for Adults, $3 Children Ages 6 -12, children 5 and under are free.  Rides will load and unload next to the Old Courthouse.
  • Bring your cameras and enjoy breakfast with Santa at The Carlisle Sports Emporium from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM on Saturday, December 17.  Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage and juice.  This is a free event!
  • An All You Care To Eat Buffet Style Breakfast with Santa will be held at Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company, 1750 Pine Rd, Newville on Saturday, December 17.  Kids get to sit on Santa’s lap and get a free bag of goodies.

Gettysburg

  • Tickets for Totem Pole Playhouse’s 2016 production of “A Christmas Carol,” produced in association with Gettysburg Community Theatre, are on sale at Gettysburg College’s Majestic Theater box office. This family-friendly holiday production is on stage December 8-18. Ticket prices range from $30 to $36.
  • The Outlet Shoppes at Gettysburg offers FREE Carriage Rides on Friday & Saturday, December 16 & 17 from 5-8PM each night

Greencastle

  • A Live Nativity will be held at Hurley Auctions, 2800 Buchanan Trail E, Greencastle. Thursday, December 15th & Friday, December 16th  6:30 PM – 8:30 PM. Live animals, manger scene with wise men, choir, and refreshments. Donations for the local Food Bank will be accepted at this event.
  •  Six local Greencastle churches will open their doors for visitors to tour the buildings, learn about the churches’ ministries and history, as well as meet and greet church members. This year’s annual Church Tour will be held on Sunday, December 18, from 2 to 4 PM.  The following churches are participating in this year’s tour:   Cedar Grove Mennonite Church (13343 Williamsport Pike);  First Assembly of God (525 East Leitersburg Street); Grace United Church of Christ (128 East Baltimore Street); The Greencastle Church of the Brethren (36 South Carlisle Street); Greencastle Otterbein United Brethren in Christ Church (146 Leitersburg Street); and Salem Ridge Community Church (441 Pensinger Road).  Tour booklets and maps are available at the Chamber of Commerce, 217 East Baltimore Street.

Ongoing Holiday Attractions

  • The Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad operates tourist passenger trains.  The Santa Surprise Trains and the Polar Bear Express Trains are going on now. Reservations are required for these trains, but any unsold seats will be available first-come-first-serve.
  • Save on Admission to Dutch Winterland Wonderland! Celebrate the magic of the season at Dutch Winter Wonderland with rides, entertainment, and the Royal Light Show, a spectacular display of thousands of twinkling lights dancing to music. Open select weekends and weekdays in November and December.
  • Hersheypark Christmas Candylane continues with select dates until January 1.  Admission to Candylane is regularly $19 for ages 3 and up. Children ages 2 and younger are FREE.  More than 40 rides are open, including 5 coasters.
  • Santa’s Wonderland is at Bass Pro Shops, 3501 Paxton Street, Harrisburg.  There are free crafts, games, and activities.  Kids get a FREE 4×6 photo with Santa.  Please refer to the website for specific times.
  • The Trains of Christmas at Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum continues this weekend.  Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays 1 – 5 PM. The Trains of Christmas Show features an “O” Scale 3-Rail Christmas layout with steam and diesel trains by Lionel, MTH, Williams, Weaver, and other operating in snow scene on four levels. Railroad artifacts, photos, trains for kids to run, and a gift shop too! Admission: $5 Adults; $.50 Kids (ages 12 & under).
  • Whitaker Center’s Holiday Trains & Trees exhibit is open.  Beautifully decorated trees, surrounded by themed toy train sets and hands-on activities.  Holiday Trains and Trees is included with standard Science Center admission.  Find the Holiday Film Series at the Whitaker Center schedule on their website.  The Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is located at 222 Market Street, Harrisburg.
  • Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md., has an ICE! attraction, featuring a collection of ice sculptures and 2-story tall ice slides.  ICE! with its new theme “Christmas Around the World” is open now through January 1, 2017.
