Here’s a list of opportunities to get out and about this weekend in & beyond Shippensburg!

SHIPPENSBURG

An exhibit of 2D & 3D artworks by Ashley Burrows and Ann Wendle will open at the SHAPE Gallery with an artist’s reception this Friday, August 4th, from 6 to 8PM.  Let Go will be at the gallery August 4th through August 26th.  As always, the opening receptions and gallery exhibits are open to the public at no charge.

The Local Gathering will present an Musical Evening with Lauren Dukehart; Shannon Quinn and Hunter Daugherty on August 4 at 7PM.  For more events at the Local Gathering go HERE.

The Dance your Sass off Tour with Sarah Placencia & Samantha Rasinski will be at Studio Z on Saturday 11AM.  This 90 minute ZUMBA Class will be high energy with easy-to-learn choreography.  $10.  Bring a water bottle.

A FREE Community Youth Football Camp will be held August 5th at 8AM.  Hosted by Shippensburg Community Park and Recreation Authority at Veterans Stadium (Park Place), the Cumberland Valley Hitmen are offering the free camp lead by veteran semi-pro motivator Donnie Johnson.  Registration is the morning of camp.  Open to youth athletes 7-12 yrs. old.

CHAMBERSBURG/FAYETTEVILLE

Numerous Chambersburg businesses will participate in First Friday festivities on August 4 from 5 to 8PM.  On the Courthouse Plaza will be a live band performance by Cumberland Valley Christian School, cheering and tumbling demonstrations by the PA Starz, face painting by the Coyle Free Library’s Children’s Dept, a stilt walker from the Capitol Theatre’s upcoming comedy show and lots more.  Also happening this Friday night will be a watercolor display by artist Pam Wegner at The Foundry Art Co-op as well as Brussel’s Cafe hosting student and alumni musicians from CASHS in the alley of 59 North Main St.  The original 1993 Jurassic Park movie will be shown around 8:30PM at Chambers Fort Park. 

North Square Farmers Market, 50 N. Main Street is Saturday, August 5 from 8 AM to NoonChildren ages 3 -12 can sign up for POP (Power of Produce) Club.  Members receive $2 in tokens per market visit to be used on produce or vegetable plant.

Train rides at Norlo Park continue August 5th.  The miniature train, complete with a cattle car and caboose, is FREE to ride on Saturdays from 1PM to 4PM!  It is open to riders of all ages.  Last Train boards at 3:50PM.  Donations are accepted.

The Chambersburg Ballet Theatre School and Company announce the CBT Annual Open House and Registration Day, to be held Saturday, August 5th at 3PM at the Capitol Theatre’s Wood Center, on the 2nd floor of Capitol Theatre Center.  The Open House will feature CBT School information, registration for fall classes, faculty news information on the new CBT School Jazz Dance Program, and performance opportunities for CBT School Students, including a full-length “Nutcracker” in December.

GREENCASTLE

Greencastle Sportsmen’s Ox Roast: Food and entertainment the first two Saturdays in August.

NEWVILLE/CARLISLE

The Carlisle Truck Nationals is this weekend (Aug 4-6) at the Carlisle Fairgounds.  Bring the entire family to see 2,000 trucks of all sizes Friday through Sunday.  Lowered mini trucks, lifted 4x4s, chromed out big rigs, SUV’s, custom vans and the perfectly restored classics.   Daily admission is $12 on Friday and Saturday.  Sunday special of $7.  Kids ages 12 and under are admitted free.

This weekend’s double-feature at Cumberland Drive-in is “The Emoji Movie” and “The Mummy.”  Cumberland Drive-In Theatre is located at 3290 Ritner Highway, Newville.  Gates open at 7PM.  First Feature begins at approximately 9PM.

The annual Penn Township Fire Co. Fireman’s Fair is August 3, 4, & 5! Food service starts at 5PM. Games open at 6PM. There will be an ice cream eating contest on Friday evening at 7:30PM and fireworks to end the fair on Saturday night at 10PM.

The 2017 Cumberland Ag Expo is August 5 – August 13 at the Newville Lions Fairgrounds. There are dairy and animal exhibitions, shows, 4H presentations, children’s activities, tractor pulls, food, music and more. Free (except $5 admission Sat. night after 4PM).  View the complete schedule here.

The 31st Annual Grand Sousa Concert will take place Sunday, August 6, 2017, at 6:30PM at the Carlisle Theatre, 44 W. High St., Carlisle. Guest Conductor Dr. Jerry Rife will lead the ensemble made up of members of five community bands, including the Carlisle Town Band, Shippensburg Band, Greater Harrisburg Concert Band, Singer Band of Mechanicsburg and Keystone Concert Band.  FREE event.

GETTYSBURG/BIGLERVILLE

The annual South Mountain Fair takes place August 1-5 in Arendtsville.  Enjoy rides for the kids, farm animals, exhibits, and food!  Nightly entertainment, a fireworks display on Thursday, antique tractor and farm machinery parade too.  See the entire schedule HERE.  Admission Price: $7; Children under 36 inches tall admitted free.  All carnival rides and entertainment are included in the gate admission. Free Parking.  2017 Fair hours are Tuesday – Friday 4PM – 10PM.  Saturday 1PM – 10PM.

The Ford Motor Company Fund is sponsoring a day of FREE educational programs at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center Saturday, August 5.  The event is a collaboration of Ford and the Gettysburg Foundation and Gettysburg National Military Park. The public is welcome to come and enjoy an activity-filled day for adults and children alike, with free admission to the Cyclorama, Film and Museum, along with other special events held only on this day.

Utz Quality Foods will host its 4th annual Utz Summer Bash 10AM – 4PM August 4 outside of the Utz Outlet Store at 861 Carlisle St., Hanover.  This is a FREE event for the public and includes activities and games for all ages.  40+Food Vendors, Face-paintings, free Utz Snacks, Live Entertainment, Balloon animal maker & more.

MANHEIM

The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is held on the grounds of the Mount Hope Estate in Manheim. With over 90 stage shows daily, 22 Royal Kitchens and scores of artisan merchants with handcrafted wares, the Renaissance Faire invites guests to immerse themselves in the 35-acre village and experience the fantasy.  Each weekend will showcase a unique theme:  Aug. 5 & 6 – Children’s Fantasy  Celebrate the opening weekend, August 5 & 6 with discounted single-day tickets.  $17.95 when purchased in advance online or $19.95 at the gate.  Free admission for children under 12 this weekend too!
