Here’s a list of opportunities to get out and about this weekend in South Central PA!

Shippensburg

Book Sale this weekend at McLean Hall, Shippensburg University. Books are used, in great condition and priced $1 or less!  Dates and times show below.

Cumberland Valley Hitmen will honor our veterans and public servants at their home game on April 21 at Veterans Memorial Park.  Game time is at 1PM.  FREE admission and concession stand will be open.

This year the Cumberland Valley Rail-to-Trail Council’s 12th annual Race, Run, Ride & Ramble is joining forces with the Shippensburg Historical Society’s 2nd annual BrewFest to create the Cumberland Valley TrailFest. All events on April 21 will be held at the new CVRT trailhead named Shippensburg Station and the Shippensburg University triangle lawn located at the corner of Fort and Earl Streets in Shippensburg.  Enjoy 2 running races, a hike, a bike ride and a kids run on the Cumberland Valley Rail-Trail (race time 9AM). The Shippensburg Historical Society’s BrewFest will include craft brews and spirits from local breweries and distilleries, food, and live music from 11:30AM – 5PM.

The Shippensburg University Community Orchestra will perform a Spring concert at Luhrs Performing Arts Center April 22, 3PM. Free Admission.  No ticket needed.

Newville/Carlisle

The 17th annual Kid’s Fishing Derby at Green Spring Brethren in Christ Church, 720 Greenspring Road, Newville will be held Saturday, April 21 from 8AM – Noon.  The event is open to children ages 3-15.  All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration begins at 7AM on Derby Day.  Fishing starts promptly at 8AM.  FREE FISHING – Door Prizes – Food Stand!

Cumberland Drive-In Theatre is open Friday and Saturday this weekend.  Showing will be “Rampage” and “Ready Player One.” Gates open at 7PM.  First feature begins at approximately 8:10PM. 

On April 21 from 3PM – 5:30PM community children can enjoy a Spring Egg-Stravananza at 10 Mt. Rock Rad, Newville.  A great event for kids, walking thru 5th grade. Pony rides, animals, free food, egg hunt, lots of prizes, Captain America, carnival games, bounce house and lots of fun. Additional parking at the Newville Church of the Brethren on Heights near Newville Rd.

The 2018 Art, Music, and Wine Walk is April 21, Noon to 5PM.  The annual event combines local merchants, regionally renowned musicians, award winning art exhibits, and fine wine and food tastings into an afternoon celebration of spring and community.  Tickets for this event are $18 in advance, and can be purchased in person at Pat Craig Studios, Majorie’s Gems, Castlerigg Wine Shop, Artist Market of Pomfret, online at Pomfret Group’s website.

The Carlisle Family YMCA is hosting Healthy Kids Day, an annual, national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids and families. Information and activities for kids and their families outside the Y from 10AM-2PM on Saturday, April 21.  Inflatables, outdoor games, and Carlisle Borough Police K-9 demonstration at 12:30PM.

Spring Carlisle, the annual collector and classic car swap meet, runs April 18-22 with a car corral and auction filling 150 acres at the Carlisle Fairgrounds.

You are invited to join the Friends of Kings Gap and park staff on Sunday, April 22 from 1PM to 5PM, for a Volunteer Open House and Earth Day celebration in the Cameron-Masland Mansion. A Friends of Kings Gap Member Social, including light refreshments, will follow the day’s activities at 5PM. The day will include:

Chambersburg

The Chambersburg Garden Club will have the 82nd annual Daffodil Show on April 21, 2-6PM and April 22, Noon-4PM. Free and open to the public at the First Lutheran Church, 43 West Washington Street, Chambersburg.

The 11th annual auction of the Operation Christmas Child of South Central PA organization is April 21, starting at 3PM at the Chambersburg Mennonite Church. The doors will open at 2PM for review of items and there will be a food stand available.

The Third Annual Earth Day Celebration, hosted at Chambers’ Apothecary is April 21, 10AM – 2PM.  This is a free community event and open for the public.  Giveaways (75 sapling trees), FREE shredding, tickets ($12) for a chicken dinner from Smith’s BBQ Chicken and more!

Waynesboro

Come see the new Antietam Humane Society’s Adoption Center and Creekside Pet Resort at their grand opening event on April 21, 10AM – 2PM!  Activities include kid’s crafts, teen games, face painting, a dog costume contest, a drawing for a weekend stay at the Boarding Center, and more.

A Kids Trout Fishing Rodeo by Experience Life Outdoors is Saturday, April 21.  $7/child (must pre-register).  Registration includes: T-Shirt, Breakfast or Lunch Sandwich & drink, Fish Frying Station, Raffle Prizes every 15 minutes, Fish Fillet Station, Bouncy House, and Face Painting.  Sign in starts at 7AM. Location:  Farm Boys Lawn Care, 10748 Wayne Highway.

The WaynesboroFest’s Fishing Rodeo at Red Run Park is April 21.  Registration for this free kid’s event will begin at 9AM and go until 9:45AM. The Fishing Rodeo will run from 10AM until Noon.  There will be three age groups:  Ages 3-5, Ages 6-9, Ages 10-13.  Contestants must supply their own fishing rod/reel, tackle and bait. Parents may assist their child, but they are not permitted to fish. Limit of 5 trout.

Join The Redneck Outlaws Inc. for their 5th annual trout derby brought to you by No One Fights Alone Cancer Benefit Inc. The event will be held Sunday, April 22 starting at 8AM. Kids Fish Only (age limit is 16) for the rest of the day at The Beaver Farm, 10748 Wayne Highway, Waynesboro. 3 Fish Limit.

Shady Grove

Shady Grove’s Annual Spring Fling will take place on April 21 & 22 (9AM – 3PM at Shady Grove Ruritan) and will consist of craft, direct sales, and yard sale/flea market vendors.  Food, fun & shopping for the entire family. Children’s activities will include make & take crafts, bubble park, and carnival style games.  

Gettysburg

A Children’s Earth Day Event, “Save the Bees” at Hollabaugh Farms is April 21, 10AM – 2PM.  Come and plant seeds to take home that will grow into a bees’ favorite flowers.  Supplies included but be prepared to get a little dirty.  No registration required. This event is free and appropriate for ages 3-10.

Mechanicsburg

Mechanicsburg Earth Day Festival is a one-day event on April 21, 9AM – 3PM.  Music, Workshops, Vendors, and Kids’ Activities throughout the town.

Maryland Events

National Junior Ranger Day is Saturday, April 21 at 10AM at the Park Visitor Center, Antietam National Battlefield.  Young people ages four to twelve can participate in special programs, interact with volunteers and rangers portraying Civil War soldiers, and have the opportunity to become Junior Park Rangers.

Celebrate Earth Day & The Monarch Life Cycle at the Discovery Station on April 21, 11AM – 11:30AM.  Children are invited to participate in our hands-on program about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. There will be hands-on activities in our STEAM Machine Exhibit to celebrate Earth Day too. Recommended for children 7 and up.
