Here’s a list of family friendly opportunities to get out and about this weekend in & beyond Shippensburg!

SHIPPENSBURG

A FREE Community Youth Football Camp will be held August 4, 8AM – Noon.  The Cumberland Valley Hitmen are offering the free camp at Veterans Stadium, Park Place.  Registration is the morning of camp beginning at 7AM.  Open to youth athletes 8-14 yrs. old.

Uprise Events Live Inc. presents Big Daddy Weave Live in concert, Saturday, August 4, at Shippensburg High School Auditorium.  General Admission Doors open at 6PM.  VIP tickets include General Admission, early access & Q&A with the artist – doors open at 5PM.

CHAMBERSBURG/FAYETTEVILLE

North Square Farmers Market, 50 N. Main Street is Saturday, August 4 from 8AM to Noon.

Gandor Outdoors Chambersburg will be hosting a flag raising ceremony on August 4, 9AM. The event is free and open to the public and will include refreshments and snacks.  The massive 3,200 square foot, 40X80 flag is 130 feet up in the air atop the flagpole that stands in the parking lot.

The 3rd annual Home Run Derby to Fight Drug Addiction is August 4, 9AM at Greene Township Park.  All proceeds from the event will go to Gracie’s Place.  Winners for each age division.  Each first round participant will be given 90 seconds to hit as many home runs as possible. Registration fee of $20 on the day of the event. Please bring cash for the entry fee.

FREE Concerts at Chambersburg Memorial Park Kiwanis Band Shell continue all Summer long. View the dates HERE.

Train rides at Norlo Park continue August 4, weather permitting.  The miniature train, complete with a cattle car and caboose, is FREE to ride on Saturdays from 1PM to 4PM!  It is open to riders of all ages.  Last Train boards at 3:50PM.  Donations are accepted.

GREENCASTLE

Greencastle Sportsmen’s Ox Roast is August 4 and 11.  Food and entertainment the first two Saturdays in August.  Food served from Noon – 9PM.

WAYNESBORO

The second annual Waynesboro Wizarding Festival on August 3 & 4 celebrates the spirit and theme of Harry Potter.  The following Saturday highlights take place at Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library – Care of Magical Creatures at 10AM, character book signing at 1PM, and Eerie Escape Room from 10AM – Noon.  Food and craft vendors will be set up in Main Street Park from 8AM – 3PM on Saturday.  For more details and a schedule go HERE.

NEWVILLE/CARLISLE

The Carlisle Truck Nationals is this weekend through August 5 at the Carlisle Fairgounds.  Bring the entire family to see 2,000 trucks of all sizes Friday through Sunday.  Lowered mini trucks, lifted 4x4s, chromed out big rigs, SUV’s, custom vans and the perfectly restored classics.  Kids ages 12 and under are admitted free.

This weekend’s double-feature at Cumberland Drive-in is “The Darkest Minds” and “Mission Impossible: Fallout.”  Cumberland Drive-In Theatre is located at 3290 Ritner Highway, Newville.  Gates open at 7PM.  First Feature begins at approximately 8:45PM.

The annual Penn Township Fire Co. Fireman’s Fair continues through August 4.  Food service starts at 5PM. Games open at 6PM.  Fireworks will end the fair on Saturday night at 10PM.

Friends of Kings Gap will bring Music on the Mountain to Kings Gap Environmental Education Center, 500 Kings Gap Road, Carlisle on Sunday, August 5.  Two Bluegrass groups; Bailey’s Crossing (3PM) and Mountain Ride (5:30PM).  The free summer concerts begin at 3PM and end at 7:30PM.  Bring your blanket or chair. Rain or shine. Food will be available for purchase.

MECHANICSBURG

Ashcombe Farm and Greenhouses is hosting Butterfly Day on Saturday, August 4, 9AM – 2PM. Come for a day full of fun, butterfly-themed activities. There will be a petting zoo, a free tour of the butterfly garden, butterfly house, fairy garden workshops, information displays, butterfly merchandise and products, and free children’s crafts. There will be a butterfly release at Noon in the garden.

GETTYSBURG/BIGLERVILLE

The annual South Mountain Fair is going on now through August 4 in Arendtsville.  Enjoy rides for the kids, farm animals, exhibits, and food!  Nightly entertainment, antique tractor & farm machinery parade on Saturday.  See the entire schedule HERE.  Admission price is $7. Children under 36 inches tall are free. Unlimited carnival rides are included in the admission price! Children under 36″ tall ride for free. 2018 Fair hours are Tuesday – Friday 4PM – 10PM.  Saturday 1PM – 10PM.

The Gettysburg Foundation announced that the Ford Motor Company Fund is sponsoring a day of FREE educational programs at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center on Saturday, August 4!  The public is welcome to come and enjoy an activity-filled day for adults and children alike, with free admission to the Cyclorama, Film and Museum, ice cream, music, along with other special events and activities held only on this day.

Hollabaugh’s Annual Peach Fest is Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5 from Noon to 5PM.  Hollabaugh Bros., Inc. Retail Farm Market hosts two afternoons of peachy fun, featuring peach samples, home-made peach ice cream sundaes and peach baked goods, lawn games, wagon rides, face painting, kids’ bounce house, fun kids’ activities, Fairy Tale Trail walking storybook path and deals on peach products.  $1 to park and additional cost for some food and activities.

McCONNELLSBURG

The Fulton County Fair in McConnellsburg continues through August 4. $6 admission; $9 admission with rides. On Saturday, August 4 at 6:30PM is Truck Dirt Drags. 

MANHEIM

Opening weekend at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5.  Celebrate the opening weekend with discounted single-day tickets, $17.95 advance online or $19.95 at the gate!  Please choose Opening Weekend ticket option when purchasing your tickets online.   In addition, the PA Renaissance Faire is offering FREE admission to children 11 and under this weekend (no ticket is needed for admission).  Mount Hope Estate, home of the PA Renaissance Faire, is located in Northern Lancaster County. The street address is 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim, PA 17545. The faire is open for 13 weekends—Saturdays, Sundays & Labor Day Monday, August 4 through October 28, 2018. The gates will open at 11AM and close at 8PM each Faire day.

HAGERSTOWN, MD

EAA Chapter 36 is hosting a Fly-in, Drive-in Breakfast on August 4 at Hagerstown Regional Airport Firehouse next to main terminal. Free Young Eagle airplane rides for kids ages 8-17 from 9AM – Noon.  Hagerstown Aviation Museum will be on hand with their large aircraft.
