What’s Happening | Memorial Day Weekend

Here’s a list of opportunities to get out and about this weekend!

The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, May 26 marks the first free fishing day in the Commonwealth.  Fish-for-Free Days allow residents and non-residents to legally fish in Pennsylvania without a fishing license. All other fishing regulations apply.

Shippensburg

The Shippensburg Memorial Park Pool will be opening Saturday, May 25 at Noon!

The Joint Veterans Council of Shippensburg will hold the annual Memorial Day ceremonies beginning at 10AM at Locust Grove Cemetery, followed by services at Spring Hill Cemetery at 11AM, and flag raising ceremony at Shippensburg Veterans Memorial Park at 12PM.  The Shippensburg Band will present a Memorial Day Concert at 12:30PM at Branch Creek. At 1:15PM the Navy & Marine Memorial Services will be conducted at Branch Bridge on King Street.  The Memorial Day parade will begin at 2PM from the corner of King and Prince streets.

Newville/Carlisle

Cumberland Drive-In Theatre is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on Memorial Day Weekend.  Double Feature: Friday-Saturday, May 24 – May 25  Aladdin and Dumbo.  Triple Feature: Sunday, May 26 Aladdin, Dumbo, and Shazam!  Gates Open at 7PM. First feature begins at 8:45PM.

The Cumberland Valley Tractor Pullers Association is having a pull at the Newville Lions Fairgrounds on May 25 at 6:30PM.  Admission is $10 for adults with children 12 and under free.  Concession Stand available.

The Newville Borough Council Recreation Committee will host the first community concert of 2019 on Sunday, May 26 from 6PM to 8PM at the Newville Community Park, 50 West Street Newville. The concert will feature the Shippensburg Swing Band. Refreshments will be available from the food stand operated by Movement Outreach. Parking is available at the Zion Church lot on West Street. Please bring your lawn chair.

The Joint Veterans Council of Newville will hold a Memorial Day parade starting at 1PM on May 27. Memorial Day Services will immediately follow the parade at the Fountain at the Veterans Memorial. The service will include guest speaker retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Timothy Moul and will honor the veterans by placing flowers at the memorial, hanging Hometown Heroes Banners, and the playing of taps.

Chambersburg/Fayetteville

The Chambersburg Aquatic Center is scheduled to open May 25.

Caledonia State Park’s swimming pool will NOT be open for Memorial Day Weekend due to unexpected maintenance problems.

This Saturday, May 25, will be the Opening Day of North Square Farmers Market’s 2019 season.  Vendors, community organizations, live music, and more.  North Square Farmers Market is open every Saturday morning, 8AM to Noon, from May 25 to October 19.  New location!  The market will be set up in the back parking lot in Chambers Fort Park on North Main (across the street from old location).

The Cumberland Valley Twenty-One Day Retreat Organization will sponsor the Chambersburg Memorial Day parade on May 27 at 9AM.

A Memorial Day Concert by the Cumberland Valley School of Music will be held Monday, May 27 at 7:30PM.  The patriotic concert is part of the 2019 Summer Concerts at Chambersburg’s Memorial Park.

The miniature train at Norlo Park will be up and running on Saturdays throughout Summer and Fall.  Train rides will begin Saturday, May 25 at 1PM.  The miniature train, complete with a cattle car and caboose, is free to ride on Saturdays from 1PM to 4PM.  It is open to riders of all ages.  Donations are accepted.

Country Creek Produce Farm is open now for U-pick Strawberries.  U-pick price is $2.66/lb.  Go here for a guide to places where you can pick your own strawberries in our area!

Waynesboro

“Be a Hero!” is the theme for Renfrew Institute’s 30th annual Youth Festival on Sunday, May 26 from 12:30PM to 5:30PM at Renfrew Park in Waynesboro.  The free event features a variety of workshops, demonstrations, activities, and entertainment throughout the day.

Mechanicsburg

Williams Grove Speedway will set off fireworks on Friday, May 24, following its 7:30PM sprint car races.  The speedway is located at 1 Speedway Drive, off Williams Grove Road, Monroe Twp.

Harrisburg

ArtsFest is Saturday through Monday, May 25 – May 27 in Riverfront Park, Harrisburg.  Ten city blocks will be lined with 250 juried artists, non-stop entertainment, and dozens of food vendors. Also check out the BeerFest, JazzFest, FilmFest and KidsFest. It is free!  Hours are 10AM-7PM Saturday and Sunday; 10AM-5PM Monday.

The Harrisburg Senators baseball team will be in town over the weekend playing the Reading Fightin Phils at FNB Field on City Island.  Check out two fireworks displays being held post-game on the nights of Friday, May 24, and Sunday, May 26.

Bass Pro Shops Harrisburg is having a Kids’ Weekend Event on May 25 and 26. Kids activities include the catch and release pond, free photo download, crafts, camping workshop (1:30PM), and food samples from Noon – 5PM on Saturday and Noon – 4PM on Sunday.

Hershey

The Boardwalk at Hersheypark opens this Saturday!  Opening May 25, The Boardwalk at Hersheypark features 16 unique water attractions and more than one million gallons of water for guests of all ages to make a splash this summer.  In addition, the new Reese’s Cupfusion ride at Hersheypark will open Saturday.

Tipton

DelGrosso’s Amusement Park is having a Memorial Day Weekend Celebration beginning Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27.  Use the special coupon to receive $5 off your All-Day Fun Pass.  All Veterans and Service Members get a FREE All-Day Fun Pass on Memorial Day Monday with Military ID.  Must get free wristband at ticket booth.
